At Heller Orthodontics, we understand that visiting an orthodontist for the first time can cause some anxiety, so we want to ensure you know what to expect at your first visit. We are an experienced and leading provider of Invisalign, braces, and other orthodontic treatments in Bethesda and Laurel. We want you to be completely comfortable, and we’ll do all we can to ease any worries.
Your Orthodontic Exam
During your first visit with us, you should plan to spend nearly an hour at our office, so that we have time for your exam and to answer all of your questions. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by our receptionist or patient coordinator, who will ask for some information and then take you to an exam room to see the orthodontist.
The procedure will begin by taking a set of regular photographs of your teeth. We’ll pair these with an examination of your teeth and jaws and take x-rays. We’ll also ask a series of questions, such as whether your jaws make any noise when your mouth is opening or closing, if you have any problems with chewing or swallowing, if you grind your teeth, or snore. All of this information will be used to make a proper diagnosis that will be needed to finalize your treatment plan.
After the Exam with Your Orthodontist
Depending on the results of the exam, we will recommend orthodontic treatment if it is necessary. Treatment may begin right away, or it might be best to wait until a later time, depending on your teeth and jaws’ developmental stage. In many cases, we’ll continue periodic checkups until it’s the appropriate time to begin treatment.
When the treatment plan is finalized, we’ll thoroughly discuss your treatment, how long it will last, and its cost. This is the perfect time to ask us any questions that you may have about your treatment. We believe that open communication is essential to treatment success, and we promise to be open and honest with you about your orthodontic situation.
