Accelerated Treatment
The average time to wear traditional metal braces is one to two years, while the typical time for clear braces is for nine to 18 months. Although the time spent wearing orthodontic gear is a worthwhile investment, people still wish treatment time could be shorter. Our Accelerated Treatment system in Bethesda MD has made that wish a reality for most patients.
What is the Accelerated Treatment?
Accelerated treatment using High Frequency Vibration.
How Does Accelerated Treatment Work?
The first step in using this system is to place the mouthpieces over each row of teeth. Next, you turn on the handheld device to activate its SoftPulse technology. SoftPulse sends gentle vibrations that reach the roots of your teeth and the bone surrounding them. The vibrations increase activity at the cellular level and help to remodel the bones in your mouth. The result is more tooth movement in less time and a more comfortable orthodontic experience.
You only need Accelerated Treatment for 20 minutes a day to reduce your overall treatment time. Some patients see as much as a 50 percent reduction in the amount of time they need to wear braces, but keep in mind that each patient is unique. You may have severe alignment issues that another patient doesn’t have, thereby requiring you to wear braces longer, even when using Accelerated Treatment.
Ideally, you want to receive Accelerated Treatment for 20 consecutive minutes. If you do need to stop the vibrations for any reason, you can pause the system up to six times before it ends the session. Be sure to relax your jaw and facial muscles to allow the mouthpieces to remain secure and maximize your comfort.
Since your teeth shift at a faster rate with Accelerated Treatment, you will need to come to the Bethesda or Laurel branch of Heller Orthodontics more often for adjustments. The payoff is that you could potentially cut several months off the time you need to wear braces or aligners. Although dental insurance doesn’t currently cover this procedure, Heller Orthodontics offers several payment plans for your convenience.
Factors That Influence How Long You Wear Braces
Besides getting Accelerated Treatment to speed up tooth movement, several other factors affect how long you need to wear braces. These include:
- Age: Children and teenagers tend to have a shorter treatment time because their jaws and bites are still changing and growing, making it easier for teeth to move into a new position.
- Type of braces: Treatment with clear aligners is quicker than standard metal braces. Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for aligners, especially those with severe alignment issues.
- Your compliance with treatment: Maintaining a positive attitude and following all instructions from your orthodontist are critical to your long-term success. Wearing traditional braces often means avoiding certain types of food to avoid breaking them. You should only remove clear aligners when eating or brushing your teeth. Keeping up with your appointments is also essential.
